Arlene (Petoskey) Naganashe

Arlene (Petoskey) Naganashe (Tobashash Kwe Storyteller Woman) started her journey December 29, 2024. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family present. Arlene was a proud Zhimaaganish (veteran) having served in the Navy as a nurse.

She was a proud member of the LTBB. Arlene was born on March 15, 1939, the daughter of Peter (Sully) Petoskey and Irene Marie (Shomin) Petoskey.

Education was important to her, and she earned a master’s degree in nursing from Northern Michigan University. She worked at many places, the most notable was her position as the Health Director for the LTBB. She also worked at Lockwood Hospital in the Mental Health Department, and at The Villa at the Bay of Petoskey (formerly Bortz).

Arlene was an avid traditional dancer up until she could no longer participate. She loved going to the casino, and you could find her up there on her favorite machines. She enjoyed listening to her great-grandchildren playing around in her living room. She enjoyed watching football, especially the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. Arlene also loved watching basketball, her favorite shows were Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, The Voice, and Law & Order.

She was an activist, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a brilliant example of how a leader should be and will be greatly missed by all those that she inspired. Baamaapii Kawaabimin.

Arlene Naganashe was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents Angeline & Edmond Shomin; daughter Sandra Ilene Naganashe; son Jim ( Jimbo) Naganashe; sister Margaret Brown; daughter Glenda Naganashe; and half-brothers.

Arlene is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Jim Naganashe; her children Thomas Shomin of Peshawbestown & Marcella Reyes of Harbor Springs, John 1939 ~ 2024

(Jobin) Naganashe of Petoskey, Lisa and Dave Brookins of Petoskey Rick Dewey of California, Theresa Boda-Naganashe of Petoskey, Annette and Adel Khalaf of New Jersey, Patrick Naganashe of Petoskey, Michael Naganashe of Harbor Springs, and Eric Naganashe of Petoskey; grandchildren James & Hanna Shomin, Rachel & Rob Ribeiro, Mathew & Stephanie Shomin, Heather Shomin, Elana Naganashe, Emily Naganashe, Kaiah Keshick-Eedy, Christina Dewey, Kenny (zhoomingwe) Dewey & Maaniinh Fonseca, Alex Dewey, Stanley, Dewey, Jonathan Boda & Theresa Alker, Ashley Boda, Hesham & Aya Khalaf, Sandra Naganashe & her partner Corina, Sophia Naganashe, Nimkii Naganashe & Cici, Autumn Naganashe, and Matthew & Todd Hagerman; great-grandchildren Lily Shomin, Yara Powell, Malachi Prado, Able, Maria, Gabe Prado, Gavin, Aria & Joaquin Boda, Carter & Grayson Boda, Wabooz & Waaseyaa Naganashe, and Patrick Ribeiro; sister Audrey Hegenbarth; brother-in-law Thomas & Diane Naganashe, and Donald Boda; uncle Paul Shomin; sister-in-law Nancy Shananaquet; and many nieces and nephews and all the extended family to name.

Arlene is lying in repose at her home in the protection of her family. Those who would like to pay their respects may do so at 34 Bridge Street Petoskey, Michigan 49770. The fire will last until Wednesday January 1, 2025.

A visitation and rosary service will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday January 2, 2025, at the LTBB Governmental Center. A funeral service will be held to honor her life and encourage her on her walk at the LTBB Governmental Center at 10:00 AM on Friday January 3, 2025.
