Kenneth J. Krantz

Kenneth J. Krantz

SUTTONS BAY – Kenneth James Krantz, 93, of Suttons Bay, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at his home.

Ken was a first-generation Swede born in the United States on September 28, 1931, in Menominee, MI, to Arvid and Karin (Nilsson) Krantz.

He graduated from Stephenson High School, University of Michigan, and North Carolina State with a degree in architecture. In 1954, in Raleigh, NC, he married the love of his life, Betty Jane Cork, who preceded him in death on November 29, 2019.

Ken and Betty shared a lifelong passion for adventure and travel, exploring Europe extensively before many destinations became widely known. Poland held a special place in Ken’s heart. One of their most memorable journeys was when Ken painted a mural at a church, earning enough to fund a year-long adventure, traveling throughout nine countries with their young children, and spending three months on the island of Ibiza where the older children attended school. The family embarked on this adventure by driving a Volkswagen bus to Canada, where they boarded a ship to England.

In the early years, Ken worked as an architect for Harferfield in Traverse City, Arai & Hummel in Suttons Bay, and eventually on his own designing many homes throughout the area. During that time, Ken designed and installed the tile mosaic mural of Jesus at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, which remains in place.

While still working as an architect, in 1965 Ken and Betty opened Inter Arts Studio, an eclectic assortment of goods and fabrics from all over the world. They eventually opened Studio 2 in Fishtown, and Studio 3 on Union Street in Traverse City.

A Swedish Christmas Eve tradition of Lutefisk, Brown Beans, Limpa bread and rice pudding, was the yearly meal Died January 21, 2025 continued by Ken for the family to “enjoy.” A grandson mentioned that it wouldn’t be Christmas without the lutefisk!

Ken’s artistic spirit was an integral part of his life. He loved sharing his artwork with others, often taking walks around Suttons Bay to visit friends and share stories. His grandchildren hold cherished memories of time spent at their grandparents’ home, playing “library” and soaking in the warmth and love that Ken and Betty provided.

Known for his strong personality, Ken left a lasting impression on everyone he met—whether they loved him or found him challenging. He shared a friendly rivalry with his sister Marge over who would live the longest, a testament to his lively and competitive spirit.

Ken is survived by his children, Shannon (Steve) Mentzer, Thomas Krantz, and Matthew (Armanda) Krantz; his sister, Marge Johnson; his grandchildren, Matthew Merritt, Katie (Tom)Mentzer-Bennetts, Taylor (Dominic) Mentzer-Palumbo; Andrew ( Jessica) Krantz, Adam Krantz, and Zachary Krantz; and his greatgrandchildren, Kolt Krantz, Briar Krantz, Addison Krantz, Jack Bennetts, Quinn Bennetts, Francis Palumbo, and one more great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Jane; his sister, Carol Krantz; and his dearest cousin, Ann Krantz.

The family will host a gathering in April, the month Ken and Betty moved to Suttons Bay in 1957.
