Thomas George “Tom” Isleib
Thomas George “Tom” Isleib, 70, died January 22, 2025. Tom was born August 29, 1954, to Donald Richard and Carol Marjorie Weed Isleib. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra Thompson Isleib, by sons Jacob Thomas (Mary Holer) of Andover, CT and Jeffrey Alexander (Ayaka Fujimori) of Kobe, Japan, by four granddaughters, Eleanor, Alice, Thea, and Anna, by two brothers, Steven (Linda) and James (Diane) Isleib, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom was a graduate of Libertyville High School in Libertyville, IL, of Michigan State University and of North Carolina State University. He worked 36 years as a plant breeder on the faculty of Michigan State University and N.C. State University, participating in the release of two soybean varieties, twelve peanut varieties, and numerous publications. Tom taught and mentored many during his career and formed great friendships with his technicians, graduate students, and faculty members. He loved his work and always maintained his focus on serving the peanut growers and industry of North Carolina. Tom was devoted to his family and pursued a variety of personal interests and hobbies. He earned a black belt in Taekwondo and, along with Sandy, enthusiastically supported their sons with their arts and sports interests through the years. The family had a cabin in Fancy Gap, Virginia that they enjoyed for 10 years often with family and friends. Tom and Sandy enjoyed fostering and volunteering for The French Bulldog Rescue Network, where they fostered and adopted several dogs throughout the last 20 years. A lifelong history buff, Tom was extremely active researching genealogy for family and friends. Becoming grandparents was the ultimate joy for Tom and Sandy. Tom had a brilliant mind and a sense of humor that he attributed to his mom and the fun childhood she and his dad provided their boys.

Retiring to Michigan brought Tom and Sandy closer to their immediate families. Their new neighborhood turned out to be a source of many great friendships and fun times.
Tom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2024, which he fought bravely to afford him more time with those who were so dear to him.
A celebration of life is planned for March 1, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at the Empire Town Hall, Front Street, Empire, Michigan.
