SUTTONS BAY – Phyllis Jean Bekkering, affectionately known as “Toto” to her granddaughters and most recently as “PJ” to the many friends who loved her at Medilodge, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the age of 99 ½.

Phyllis was born on August 16, 1925, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Frank and Mabel (Garrison) Sunnock. She graduated from Central High School in Kalamazoo and had a deep love for home and family.

During World War II, Phyllis proudly served her country in a unique way— dancing for the USO at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, MI. She was fondly known as “The Gal from Kalamazoo,” bringing joy and morale to countless servicemen. Above all, Phyllis was a devoted mother and grandmother, always giving the best of herself to her family. Later in life, while residing at Medilodge, she found joy in playing Bingo and expressing her creativity through arts and crafts. Her warmth, kindness, and spirited presence will be Died February 4, 2025 deeply missed.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Ric (Michelle) Bekkering, Suzann (Bruce) Breuker, and Rebecca (Edward “Teddy”) Garrison-Muir; her daughter-inlaw, Lisa Bekkering; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-greatgranddaughter. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, William Bekkering, on February 16, 2022, as well as her sister, Margaret VandenBerg.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and private family services have been held.
