Virginia “Ginny” Scaer

Virginia “Ginny” Scaer

Virginia Eileen Scaer, affectionately known as Ginny, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at the age of 83.
Ginny was born April 4, 1941 in Chicago Illinois to Robert Gustave Pieper and Abbie Mae LaSeur.
The family moved to Valparaiso, Indiana while Robert served his country during World War II. He was gone nearly two years in Morocco and Algeria while Ginny was a toddler. Ginny spent her school years in Valparaiso, especially enjoying school plays and musicals. Upon graduation she enrolled in Valparaiso University, majoring in elementary education. While in college, she met the love of her life, Herb Scaer, and together they enjoyed college to the fullest. After graduation, she taught 1st and 3rd grade in Chesterton and Fort Wayne, Indiana and Upper Arlington, Ohio.
She became a child of God by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on January 7, 1961. She and Herb were married July 10, 1965 and established their home in Columbus, Ohio, where she taught 3rd grade, and Herb was enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After he graduated, they moved to Tacoma, Washington, where he completed an internship and pediatric residency. They really enjoyed many outdoor activities while there, and made some lasting friendships with fellow residents.
While in Washington, their marriage was blessed by the births of their two sons, Matthew and David. Next, they moved cross country to Cutler Army Hospital, Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, where Herb served as a staff pediatrician. Ginny enjoyed the colonial-era atmosphere and the colonial-era furniture. She especially fell in love with pine primitives, and she and a friend would enjoy their weekly treks into the tiny village to find small items to rehabilitate.
Having completed their army service, Ginny and Herb moved their family to Northern Michigan in 1973, where Ginny immersed herself in creating a loving home environment for her family. She was always the Mom to chaperone elementary field trips and activities. She kept up her involvement throughout her boys’ junior high and high school. She was always an enthusiastic supporter and member of Trinity Lutheran Church with volunteer activities and Altar Guild.
She enjoyed flower and herb gardening. She was a graceful dancer, and enjoyed ballroom, polka and country dancing, and especially the parties associated with them. The past several years, her beautiful body was attacked by an unrelenting illness, and her beautiful mind by dementia; her beautiful heart, however, remained beautiful every day of her life. But she never complained, and always displayed her dazzling smile. She died at home with her loving family at her side.
She is survived and is already sorely missed by her husband Herb, sons Matthew (Sonia) and David (Beth), brothers- and sisters-in-law Richard and Marilyn Scaer, Bob and Nancy Scaer, and Mary Loe, grandchildren Lena Scaer, Hanna Scaer, Emma Jean Mangue, and very dear friends Pat LaBelle and Deb LaGuire.
A Funeral Service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial took place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church. To leave a message for the family, please visit www. reynolds-jonkhoff.com
