Dorthea L. O’Shaughnessy

TRAVERSE CITY- Dorthea LuAnne (Bugai) O’Shaughnessy, 84, was a positive believer who passed away on Good Friday, April 18, 2025. She was the eldest of five daughters whose parents were Gordon and Ardith (Eitzen) Bugai of Cedar, Michigan. Dorthea lived in California and Tennessee until moving back four years ago close to the Cherry-Dairy Farm where she grew up on Lincoln Road.

Dorthea graduated from Traverse City Central High School and became a Registered Nurse earning her degree from Hackley Hospital School of Nursing in Muskegon, MI, and Michigan State Uni. Dorthea enlisted in the Air Force and served for five years (1966-1971); one year as a flight nurse in Vietnam. She received many awards during her time of service: Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. Dorthea received rank of Captain during her service.

Dorthea served as a Registered Nurse for several decades.

She married William G. O’Shaughnessy in 1971. They had one son, Robert.

Living relatives include her husband, William, her four sisters: Bonnie (Albert Jr.) Kroupa of Traverse City, Shirley Goe of Virginia, Marlene (Edward J.)

Hahnenberg of Lake Leelanau and Anne (William Jr.) Reynolds of Cedar. First Cousins are Carolyn (Eugene) Lautner, Jim (Arlene) Balesh, Linda (Louis) Walter, Nancy ( John) Miles and cousin-in-law Linda (David) Bugai and several other cousins as well as nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Family members who predeceased Dorthea: son Robert, parents Gordon and Ardith Bugai, infant sister Theresa, Brother-in-laws Albert Kroupa Jr. and William J. Reynolds Jr. and nephew Kelly Kroupa.

A graveside service will take place at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens at a later date.
