Larry D. Gates Sr.

Larry D. Gates Sr.

KALKASKA – Larry Dean Gates Sr., 72, of Kalkaska, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Larry was born on April 8, 1953, in Sault Ste.

Marie, the son of Gerald and Violet (Homminga) Gates.

Larry was a good man— funny, full of life, and known for his goofy sense of humor. He was always cracking jokes and pulling pranks, doing whatever he could to get people laughing. He brought light into any room he entered. Larry was also kind and would give anyone in need the shirt off his back. His joy for life was contagious.

An avid outdoorsman, Larry found peace in nature. He loved hunting, fishing, and going for long walks. He mowed his lawn nearly every day just because he enjoyed being outside. An aspiring survivalist, Larry would take his “bug out” bag and camp under the stars simply because he could, even though it was usually only in his backyard. He enjoyed camping trips, quiet moments in the woods, and the freedom of the open air.

Larry also had a deep appreciation for collecting. He was especially fond of watches, knives, and guns. He loved horror and paranormal movies, “Spookers” he 1953 ~ 2025

liked to call them. He had a soft spot for animals, particularly his beloved dogs. His connection with animals spoke to his gentle nature and big heart.

Larry is survived by his mother, Violet Gates (Homminga); his life partner, Terry Cotes; Bonnie Rebone, the mother of his children; his children, Katherine Minnis, Mandy (Colin Germaine) Gates, and Larry (Bobbi) Gates Jr.; his brothers, Gerald and Louis Gates; his grandchildren, Jordan Gates, Tayler Minnis, Cameron Palmer, and Elly Gates; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Gates, and his siblings, Elsie Mae Gates, John Gates, and Paul Gates.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at Peterson Park in Northport (10001 E Peterson Park Rd, Northport, MI 49670) from 11AM – 2PM on June 15, 2025.

Memorial donations may be directed in Larry’s memory to the Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Drive, Traverse City, MI 49686.
