Martha Jane Cook
Martha Jane Cook

Martha met the love of her life, Hugh E.Cook, on June 19, 1977. After only three weeks of dating, Hugh knew she was the one, and on November 12, 1977, they were married at Trinity Church in Northport. Their love story was one of deep connection and unwavering devotion that spanned nearly 48 years.
While Martha and Hugh did not have children of their own, they were blessed with many nieces and nephews whom she adored and loved with all her heart. Her family meant the world to her, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Martha was a dedicated member of the Northport community. Early in her career, she ran her own daycare service in Northport, providing a nurturing environment for many children. She later became the assistant harbor master at G. Marsten Dame Marina, where she was known for her work ethic and her kind, helpful nature. In the last few years, Martha worked at the Pennington Collection, where she continued to bring her joy and enthusiasm to all she did.
Throughout her life, Martha built lasting friendships, most notably with Sandi Sajdak, her dear friend of 56 years who she met in childhood in Fraser, Michigan. Martha also shared a special bond with Kathy Wessell, a colleague and close companion. The family extends their deepest thanks to Sandy and Kathy for their unwavering love and support over the years.
Martha’s kindness, generosity, and laughter will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
Martha is survived by the love of her life, Hugh E. Cook; two siblings, Jeffrey (Kathy) Bruggeman, Emily (Duane) Kalember; many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, Brother-in-law Tim (Vicki) Cook, Brother-in-law Steve Cook, and Sister-in-law Lisa Denham. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Jennifer Keck and Amy Bruggeman.
The family will be holding a small celebration of Martha’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leelanau Township Fire Department in her honor and memory.
