Susan G. “Sue” Lemmen

Susan G. “Sue” Lemmen

Susan G. “Sue” Lemmen, age 77, died on August 2, 2025 in Traverse City Michigan.

Born on May 7, 1948, in Gladwin, Michigan, Susan was the daughter of Murray Lemmen (1921-1989) and Rosalie Langworthy Lemmen (1916-2000). She grew up in Flint, where she attended Kearsley Community Schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Her desire to learn led her to Michigan State University, where she graduated in 1970. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1972 (with her mother!) and later pursued additional educational credits to qualify for administrative roles.

Susan began her career teaching Special Education in Flint before moving to Traverse City in 1975. There, she dedicated two decades to the Intermediate School District (TBA ISD), working with homebound students, pre-primary impaired children, and serving as a classroom teacher and teacher consultant. Her commitment to inclusive education and student support was unwavering. Following her years in the classroom, Susan transitioned into administration and served as a building principal at Cherry Knoll and East Bay Elementary schools - continuing her lifelong dedication to nurturing young minds.

Outside of her professional life, Susan had many interests. A devoted fan of cinema, she was an enthusiastic supporter of the Traverse City Film Festival from its very first screening. She had a deep love for historical fiction and could often be found immersed in a good book. Her creative spirit shone through her quilting - especially the many baby quilts she lovingly crafted for her only grandchild, Max. As Max grew older, Susan enjoyed altering and repairing his thrifted clothing finds.

Susan also cherished daily walks shared over three years with her loyal friend Marcia - a testament to the many enduring friendships that enriched her life.

She leaves behind her beloved daughter Heather Jordan, Heather’s husband Chad, and their son Maximus. Also holding special places in Susan’s heart were Nancy Lemmen, Mark Hanson, Connie Thompson, Channon Jordan, Jordan and John Arteman - relatives who brought warmth and connection throughout her life.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her dear brother Dave (19441994); and remains fondly remembered by those whose lives she touched through family ties, friendship, education, and community.

May Susan’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. An openhouse memorial will be held from 2-4:00 pm on Saturday, August 23rd, at Bay Ridge, 3950 Scenic Ridge Dr, Traverse City. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Munson Hospice or the Leelanau Conservancy - Sugar Loaf Fund.
