SUTTONS BAY – Penelope “Penny” Jeanne Hogan, 83, formerly of Suttons Bay, passed away Friday, August 15, 2025 at Meadow Valley surrounded by her loving family.

Penelope was born November 21, 1941 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Jack and Espirita (Staggs) Bragg. On July 8, 1961, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lewiston, she married Dr. James Hogan, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2011.

She received a 2 year degree in Hotel Management from Michigan State University, where she also met the love of her life, Jim Hogan. After finishing school, they moved to Delton, MI and raised five children including Julia, Tracy, Dan, Tim, and Kelly. Penelope would tell others to call her Penny, “Like small change.” She served as a School Board Member for Delton Kellogg Schools, as an EMT, and did some volunteer work at Pennock Hospital. After retiring to Suttons Bay, MI she volunteered at the Fr. Fred Foundation, Power Book Bags, and later worked at Chimoski Bakery where she became known for the interesting saying on the shirts she wore, such as “If at first you do not succeed, skydiving is not for you.” and for her welcoming smile that would light up a room.

Penny is survived by her sister Pam (Bill) Armitage, her sister-in-law Wanda Hogan; her five children including: Julia (Mark) McCloskey, Tracy ( Jeff ) Davis, Dan (Eileen) Hogan, Tim (Annelie) Hogan, and Kelly (Ben) Gallagher; her grandchildren Chris (Amanda) Kobylinski, Josh (Courtney Dudley) Kobylinski, Brian Hogan, Amanda (Jordon) McQueen, Kevin (Zac) Hogan, Kristin Hogan, Steven Hogan, Rachel Hogan, Jameson Gallagher, Grady Gallagher, Piper Gallagher; her great grandchildren Ella, Lucas, Lainey, Meadow, Caleb, Marley; and special friends, JoAnn (Vic) Haas, Terry (Dave) Stellingworth, Joan (Bob) Orent.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and grandchildren Aaron Jaynes and Eric Hogan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6 with the family greeting friends at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church of Lake Leelanau. A luncheon will follow the Mass. A procession to and burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow the luncheon.

Our family wishes to thank so many who have offered prayers and support. We wish to also thank Meadow Valley Independent Living Facility, Dr. Kroll, Munson Hospital and ER especially all A4 staff, all Hospice of Michigan staff, and Martinson Funeral Home for all their generous care and support.
