Brenda Sue Schmidt

Brenda Sue Schmidt

Brenda Sue Schmidt, age 60, of Empire, Michigan, passed away peacefully at her home on August 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, after courageously battling cancer for the past year.

Brenda was born on January 10th, 1965 in Muskegon, Michigan, the daughter of Robert and Alice Schmidt.

She grew up with her siblings, Annette and Donald (Roxane), and attended Glen Lake Community Schools, where she excelled in both baseball and basketball. Her athletic ability and competitive spirit carried her to Western Michigan University, where she played basketball and graduated with her bachelor’s degree.

Brenda began her career serving children in need at the Sarah Fisher Home for Abused Children, where she worked for five years. She later joined FedEx, where she dedicated more than 32 years of service in Detroit, Michigan, and Memphis, Tennessee. Brenda was respected for her strong work ethic, generosity, and humor, as well as the lifelong friendships she formed with her colleagues.

Outside of work, Brenda was known for her adventurous and funloving spirit. She enjoyed traveling, playing euchre, swimming, and watching sunsets on the beach. She loved sports, music, and the occasional trip to the casino. Most importantly, Brenda loved her family and friends deeply. She was a devoted daughter, sister, and aunt who always rooted for the underdog. Her nieces and nephews—Nikayla, Shantaya, and Alex (fiancée Liv Rice)—brought her great joy, and she cherished every moment with them. Brenda also had a special bond with her dogs, Cash and Bobby, who were her loyal companions.

Brenda’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice of Michigan for their care and compassion during her final journey.

A funeral service for Brenda was held on Wednesday, August 27th at St. Phillip Neri Church in Empire. Arrangements were trusted to the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan.
