NORTHPORT- Daniel James Calhoun, 46, of Northport, left this world on January 25, 2024, in Richardson, Texas. He was born on April 11, 1977, at the Leelanau Memorial Hospital in Northport, to James and Carol ( Jones) Calhoun.

Daniel’s journey through life was marked by a spirit of adventure and service. In his hometown of Northport, he began selling popcorn, earning merit badges, and achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Notably, Daniel won a bike for selling the most popcorn, which he used to continue his popcorn-selling endeavors around town. He cherished his scouting days under the guidance of Buster Dame and his father, who served as scoutmasters.

A patriot at heart, Daniel joined the Army reserves during his senior year of high school, and immediately after graduating from Northport High School in 1995, he shipped out to the US Army boot camp in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina.

Daniel embraced creativity and entertainment, finding joy in cosplaying as Captain America and Santa Claus. His pride and joy were his contributions to the non-profit organization Love For Kids. Every December 24th, he delighted in reading “The Night Before Christmas” to children while dressed as Santa Claus. Daniel’s talent extended to officiating weddings in costume, bringing an extra touch of magic to special occasions.

He is survived by his parents James and Carol Calhoun; his son David Calhoun; his ex-wife and the mother of his son, Allison (Beaird) Calhoun; his siblings Jennifer (Travis) Diehl and Sarah Calhoun; as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

Daniel was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Harry and Berniece Calhoun and Wallace and Jane Jones.

Graveside service in Leelanau Township Cemetery will be held on May 18, 2024 with more details to be announced.
