George E. Ranger

Born on May 7, 1937, in Northport, Michigan, he was the son of Henry and Lydia (Tooley) Ranger.
George graduated from Northport High School in Leelanau County and went on to attend college at then Ferris State College, earning a bachelor’s degree in Auto Mechanics. He would work for more than thirty years for the Michigan Department of Corrections as an educator in auto mechanics at the Michigan Training Unit in Ionia.
On June 21,1958, he married the former Sophia L. “Sophie” Dame in Northport, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage until her passing in 2009. Together, they enjoyed traveling together, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, and many of the continental states. He then married the former Ann Baker in 2016 and resided in the Belding area.
George was a proud member of the Flat River Antique Auto Club and could be seen sporting his car in the area parades with Ann. He loved antique cars and tractors and often went to museums and shows. Being highly skilled in auto mechanics and body repair, he restored several antique tractors and enjoyed taking them to tractor shows. He also enjoyed photography and taking photos of cars, tractors and nature.
He was a long-time member of the Smyrna Bible Church serving in various functions 1937 ~ 2025
as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and worship leader. George was a good neighbor who always looked out for others, helping them whenever he could. He enjoyed serving people with car repairs, snow plowing neighbors’ driveways, and wherever he was needed. George will be very much missed by his wife, Ann Ranger, of Belding; his daughters, Nancy Ranger of Cedarville, Ohio, and Linda (Greg) Frye of Monroe, Ohio; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Brice) Yager and Jordan ( Jessica) Frye; a sister, Carol Bacon of Beulah, Michigan; many nieces and nephews; Ann’s sons David (Becky) Baker of Belding; Eric (Patti) Baker of Brooksville, Florida; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sophie; his daughter, Janet Ranger, in 1974; sisters, Wilda Lee and Hildagarde Hennrick; and a brother, Lewis Ranger.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Smyrna Bible Church, 4864 Whites Bridge Road, Belding, with his pastor, Rev. Roger Tahtinen officiating. He was laid to rest following the service at the Orleans Township Cemetery, next to his dear wife Sophie.
