Deborah Shaner Igleheart

Deborah Shaner Igleheart

Born on September 2, 1930 in Philadelphia to Mary DeStillfried and John Shaner, Deborah Shaner Igleheart of Bloomfield Hills passed away peacefully at home on September 23rd, with her husband of 69 years Addison Igleheart at her side.

Deborah was a children’s librarian working in both the Troy and West Bloomfield public libraries. She loved reading and story telling to children both at work and at home. She additionally loved nature and as a self-described environmentalist, was involved for many years as a volunteer and board member for the Michigan Nature Association. She supported the Leelanau Conservancy from its inception and continued this unwavering support throughout her life. Additionally, she supported Saving Birds thru Habitat and developed a profound interest in native landscaping.

For years, our family enjoyed the cottage at Sugar Loaf that Dad built in the woods in the early 1970’s. The family came up on a regular basis and enjoyed hiking, downhill and cross country skiing, the beach at Good Harbor and much, much, more. Debby’s mom, Elise “Mimi” Shaner Goodman and her husband Al Goodman would drive up from Ft. Lauderdale, FL in a wood paneled station wagon, to spend the summers. This tradition continued for many decades, and brought the family together to enjoy the gorgeous summers up north.

After spending some twenty years at the Sugar Loaf cottage, Debby and Add decided they’d like a place on the lake and the parents bought a cottage on Birchwood Drive in 1991, located between Leland and Northport. They enjoyed the beach, lovely water views, spectacular sunsets, dark starry skies 1930-2025

and wonderful times there with friends and family. They loved their good neighbors, the wildlife and birds, and the nearby woods, fields and orchard farms. These summers spent up north continued for our parents for many wonderful years.

Debby and Addison enjoyed many very special places, just a few being Pierce Stocking Drive, Leelanau State Park, and the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Debby dearly loved the Leelanau Peninsula, Leland, Northport, Glen Arbor, Omena and Suttons Bay, the 4th of July parade and fireworks, the Northport dog parade, fall leaf peeking, spring morel hunting, and winter cross country skiing. She loved going to the farmers markets and roadside fruit and vegetable stands, local shops, and restaurants. Karl Sporck’s Brisling Pottery was a very favorite place to visit for the entire family over the years. Additionally Debby and Add were supporters of the Leland Yacht Club, the Fishtown Conservancy and the Leland Country Club participating in the Sunday evening sings.

Deborah was proceeded in death by her beloved first daughter Susanna Elise Igleheart Bogue (2022) and her sister Suzanne (Merry) Shaner (1971). She is survived by her husband Addison, her half sister Barbara Von Klemperer (William Von Klemperer), her son in law Sean Bogue, her daughters Sarah Brooks-Miller (Scott) and Hilary Igleheart (Giorgio Leporati) and grandchildren Madilyne, Sean Og, Cameron, Brendan, and Alessandro, as well as more distant relatives.

A memorial service is scheduled at Beacon Unitarian Church in Troy on November 22nd at 3pm.
