Pierce Thomas Getsinger, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Traverse City on a bright winter morning, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sam Getsinger; daughters Kyna and Brie; sons-inlaw Rob Himburg and Rick Hylla; and grandchildren Taj, Tulah, Lucia, Judah, and Samuel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margrit Getsinger, and is also survived by his brother John and sister Joan.
Born September 6, 1945, in Somers Point, New Jersey, Pierce grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, spending cherished summers with family in Ocean City, New Jersey. He attended Cranbrook, Olivet College, and the University of Michigan. In Detroit he met his wife, Sam, and they were married in 1974.
Pierce was a gifted woodworker, creating custom kitchens and handcrafted furniture that became treasured heirlooms for family and friends. An avid athlete, he loved tennis, skiing, sailing, pickleball, windsurfing, and swimming daily in Grand Traverse Bay. He was also known for his love of music, cooking, and building deep community wherever he lived.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him.
