Shirley J. (Vincent) Awrey

Shirley J. (Vincent) Awrey

Shirley J. (Vincent) Awrey, 93, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026. She was raised in West Branch, Michigan where she met her high school sweetheart, Thomas E. Awrey. They shared 74 years of marriage and Tom affectionately referred to Shirley as his “British Bulldog”, a nod to her strong will and determination. This trait enabled them to build a life beyond what they could have imagined growing up during the Depression when even the bare necessities were scarce.

As a Michigan State Police officer wife, Shirley’s life included many moves, one of which brought the family to Traverse City, where she worked at Milliken’s Department store. She had a lifelong love of antique dolls - especially Schoenhut dolls- which inspired her to start her own doll hospital. She also enjoyed swimming, playing Scrabble, visiting the casino, watching John Wayne movies, and most of all, spending time and doting on grandchildren.

Though her role in life may have appeared modest, Shirley’s influence impacted several lives. As St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Awrey, just 30 days prior, and sister, Joyce Mackin. She is survived by her children, Tom Jr. (Barb), Kimberley (John) Lowe and Michael (Anne-Marie), six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A private family Funeral Mass and burial have been planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church Capital Campaign.
