Ernest G. Zeigler (“Ernie”)

Ernest G. Zeigler (“Ernie”)

Ernest George Zeigler (“Ernie”), age 76, of Maple City, passed away on November 27, 2025, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Ernie was born on October 23, 1949, in Traverse City to William and Emily “Jean” (Scott) Zeigler. He grew up in Empire, Michigan, and graduated from Glen Lake Schools.

Following high school, Ernie proudly served in the United States Navy from April 1969 to February 1971 and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

On May 4, 1973, Ernie married Barbara Olsen of Maple City. They shared 52 years of marriage and spent all those years together in the same farmhouse in Maple City, where they built a life and raised their three children: Chad, Holly, and Adam. Ernie loved his family deeply.

Ernie worked at Kasson Sand and Gravel for 45 years, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication.

Ernie had a deep love for gardening. He grew an impressive vegetable garden and generously shared the harvest with family and friends. With encouragement from his wife Barb, he also developed a passion for flower gardening, creating some of the most beautiful gardens many had ever seen—gardens he was incredibly proud of.

So beautiful, in fact, that Barb and Ernie hosted three weddings in their front yard.

He also loved collecting antiques, especially old farm antiques. Ernie enjoyed attending auctions, antique stores, flea markets, and sales, always returning home with new treasures and happily sharing their stories with anyone willing to listen. In addition, Ernie loved hunting and fishing and eagerly awaited the arrival of deer season every November 15.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Barb; his son Chad (Heidi) Zeigler; his daughter Holly Kortz ( Jason Metzke); and his son Adam Zeigler. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Taylor, Summer, Aiden, Otto, Ruby, Charlotte, Ari, Georgia, and Jacoby; his brother David ( Jean) Zeigler; and his sister Susan (Michael) Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Emily “Jean” Zeigler; his brothers Bill and Cyril Zeigler; and his grandson, Chase Zeigler.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Maple City Lions Club, with a short service followed by a luncheon.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ernie’s name to Cedar Fire and Rescue.
