Rose was born on June 10, 1932, in Cedar, the daughter of Joseph and Selma (Schopieray) Kabat. On October 23, 1954, at the Holy Rosary Church of Cedar, she married the love of her life, Melrose Harold Varney, who preceded her in death on May 24, 2022.

Rose and Mel spent nearly 68 years together, building a life centered on family, faith, and hard work. During Mel’s years of service in the Air Force, business ownership, and later adventures in retirement, Rose was the heart of their home—steady, loving, and devoted. Together they raised their daughters, traveled, and eventually enjoyed many years living in Las Vegas before returning to Traverse City to be close to family. All her life she loved to square dance, polka dance, and play bingo at the casino. Rose cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren, and her gentle presence was a comfort to all who knew her.

Rose is survived by her daughters, Tina (Patrick Galla) Van Thomme and Teresa (Paul) Conners; her grandchildren, Eric (Tara) Van Thomme, Brendon (Carly) Van Thomme, Tristan (Crystal) Van Thomme, Nick (Magan) Conners, Tim (Kerry) Conners, and Stacey (Andrew Belka) Conners; and twelve greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of almost 68 years, Mel. Her family would like to extend a big thank you to all of the Northport Highlands staff who loved and cared for their mom. A graveside service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery will be held on Saturday, June 13th at noon, with a luncheon served afterward.
