Peter Clark Wolcott
Peter Clark Wolcott

Peter Clark Wolcott, 87, of Northport, Michigan and Melbourne, Australia, passed away on March 4, 2026. Born on June 30, 1938, to Anne and Leonard ( Jack) Wolcott.
Peter is remembered for his intelligence, kindness, and love for the natural world.
A constant in Peter’s life was his devotion to Leelanau County. Peter’s beloved grandfather, Warren Rufus Smith, first came to East Leland in 1908, traveling by passenger steamer from Chicago, where he was a professor. He was accompanied by his wife, Caroline, who was a prominent suffragist and reformer. In those early years the Smiths were joined by other vacationing families, including the Porters and Truebloods. In the early summers the Smith family and their friends set up tent camps along the shore of the lake before building permanent homes in the decades that followed. It was here that Peter spent long summers during his childhood with his maternal grandparents and extended family and friends. He always remembered fondly the freedom of those summers: singing with neighbors on the lake with canoes tied together, picking cherries, and joy riding around the nearly empty streets of Leelanau County.
Peter earned his BA at Kalamazoo college in 1959 and his Masters in International Relations at Syracuse University in 1962. In 1961 Peter married Nancy Hayden in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the young couple spent their honeymoon on the shores of Lake Leelanau. Soon after graduation, Peter began work in John F. Kennedy’s newly created Peace Corps, helping to launch the first wave of volunteers into the field. After passing the foreign service exam he joined the United States Information Agency (USIA) and was soon assigned to Surabaya, Indonesia. Peter later was posted to Medan, Djakarta, Penang, and Sumatra, returning to the United States in 1970. Nancy and Peter had three children, Joel (1962), Jennifer (1963) and Victoria (1966) After his return to the United States Peter divorced and married Ilene Wolcott in 1972 in Leland, welcoming Ilene’s daughter Lauren into the family. The state department posted the couple to Finland for a year in 1974 and in 1979 they began a new posting in Melbourne, Australia. After leaving USIA Peter worked for the Victorian Government in Australia as a Public Affairs Officer, retiring in 1998.
Peter and Ilene Wolcott built a home in Northport, Michigan in 1991, where they lived part-time, visiting primarily in the winter so they could cross-country ski and enjoy the beauty of a Leelanau winter. After Ilene’s death in 2013 Peter explored the world’s birdlife through extensive travel from Antarctica to Cuba. During the Michigan winters Peter volunteered for numerous organizations including the Leelanau Conservancy, ShareCare, Leelanau Energy, and the League of Women Voters. He also participated in three different book clubs and spent many long evenings talking, drinking wine, and playing cards with his Michigan friends and neighbors.
Peter is survived by four children, Lauren Asher, Joel Wolcott, Jennifer Wolcott-Michelson, and Victoria Wolcott and eight grandchildren, Adela, Nora, Maya, Reggie, Joelyz, Rex, Alexander and Lilah. The family will gather in Leland this summer for a celebration of life.
