Leah Suzanne LaVanture, age 47, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away on April 17, 2026.
Leah was born on September 20, 1978, and grew up in Empire, Michigan. She carried her love for northern Michigan throughout her life, finding joy in its woods, rivers, and quiet beauty.
Leah will be deeply missed by her loving family, including her daughter, Ava Houghton; her spouse, Brian Kuhr; stepchildren Kelly and Kaylee Kuhr, her parents, Jerry and Susan (Goodrick) LaVanture; her brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Heather (Laing) LaVanture, as well as many extended family members who cherished her dearly.
Leah had a deep love for the outdoors and cherished time spent camping, hosting cookouts, and sharing laughter and meaningful conversations around a campfire. She found peace in gardening, walking her dog through the woods, and watching birds. Some of her happiest moments were spent kayaking and canoeing along the Manistee River.
Leah’s smile could light up any room, and her sense of humor brought joy to those around her. She had a kind and compassionate heart, and she dedicated her career to helping others. As a teacher consultant for Northwest Education Services, Leah made a lasting impact on the lives of countless children, always advocating for and supporting those who needed it most.
Leah’s life was defined by her warmth, her generosity, and her unwavering love for her family, her students, and the natural world.
In lieu of flowers, Leah’s colleagues have established a student scholarship in her name through the North Ed Foundation. The Leah LaVanture Student Impact Fund will provide a scholarship to a senior attending either Glen Lake or Buckley, in accordance with more specific terms and conditions to be determined by Leah’s family.
