Alan C. Appel Jr.

1951 ~ 2026

Alan Carey Appel Jr.

(“Scoop”), 75, of Bayfield, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 13, 2026, at Tamarack Health – Ashland Medical Center, with his loving wife by his side.

Alan was born February 26, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Alan Sr. and Lucile (Schaf) Appel. He graduated from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis and earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Northland College in Ashland.

Alan’s life was grounded in a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. He served as a deacon at Ashland Assembly of God Church and found great joy in his church family and in sharing his faith with others. Alan’s love of boats and sailing began during childhood summers in Leland, Michigan. A lifelong boatman and master craftsman, he spent decades working on boats. There was no part of a boat he could not fix, restore, or improve. He began his career at Sailboats Inc., working with Jack Culley, and later worked at Madeline Island Yacht Club and Apostle Islands Marina, where he was known for his skill, knowledge, and dedication.

Alan will be remembered for his craftsmanship, his love of the water, and the quiet kindness he extended to everyone around him.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Appel, of Bayfield; her children, Ryan McMullin, Katherine Casey (Ashante Odogun), and Riley McMullin (Amy); grandson Jayce; and grandchildren Holden Patrick Casey and Jude William Casey. He is also survived by his sisters, Lucy Anne Appel and Sally S. Appel; his brother, Dan Appel (Kate); five nieces and nephews; and their ten children.

A funeral service, led by Pastor Jake Lancaster, will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leland Yacht Club Foundation or the Leelanau Conservancy.
