CEDAR – William Peter Winowiecki Sr., 64, of Cedar, passed away, Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Medilodge of Leelanau with his family at his side.

Bill was born July 30, 1961, in Traverse City, the son of Frank and Bernice (Mikowski) Winowiecki Sr. On May 24, 1986 at the Holy Rosary Church of Cedar he married Sue Ellen (Snyder) Winowiecki who survives.

Bill spent his life surrounded by the waters, woods, and community he loved. He was known for his strong work ethic, kind heart, and thoughtful nature. Whether lending a helping hand, sharing a story, or preparing a meal, Bill made those around him feel welcome and valued.

A lifelong outdoorsman, Bill found his greatest joy on the waters of Lake Michigan. As the Charter Boat Captain of Watta Bite, he built lasting friendships with countless anglers while sharing his passion for fishing. His dedication to Michigan’s fishing community extended well beyond the deck of his boat. He proudly served as President of the Michigan Charter Boat Association and was an active member of the Lake Michigan Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee, where he worked to help preserve and strengthen the region’s fishing traditions for future generations.

When he wasn’t on the water, Bill could often be found in the woods during hunting season. He especially looked forward to the opening day of Michigan’s white-tailed deer season, a tradition he faithfully observed year after year. He also loved cooking for family and friends by sharing his catch, with the annual fish fry, or his famous smoked fish dip or grilled mozzarella smothered salmon as well he was known for grilling exceptional steaks, bringing people together over good food and good conversation.

Bill will be remembered for his generous spirit, unwavering dedication to his family and friends, his love of outdoors, and the countless lives he touched through his work and volunteer leadership. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who knew him, the traditions he cherished, and the waters he so deeply loved.

Bill will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow captains, members of the fishing community, and all who have had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sue Ellen Winowiecki; a son, William (Stephanie) Winowiecki Jr. and Grandson Caden. Siblings, Ben (Virginia) Winowiecki, Frank (Claudette) Winowiecki Jr., Charlene Kulanda, Janet Winowiecki, a brother-in-law, Ray Savage and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Savage, brother-in-law Richard Kulanda.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 7th at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. An additional celebration of Bill’s life in September will be announced at a later date.
