Verna was born May 7, 1970 in Ontario, Canada the daughter of David and Lucy Ann (Murray) Trudeau. On August 6, 2022 in Traverse City she married her long-time love, Anthony “Bear” Paul Sams who preceded her in death on November 29, 2022.

Verna lived a life rooted in resilience, unwavering faith and a servant’s heart. She was known for always putting others before herself, offering kindness, encouragement and helping hand. Verna’s strong faith in God and she found joy worshipping at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Whether she was helping with bake sales or attending her loved one’s sporting events, Verna cherished every opportunity to be with her family.

At the bake sales Verna was known for her lemon meringue pies, fry bread, homemade bread, and cookies. As a young lady she sang in the Native choir and carried a life-long love of music. That love of music crossed paths with her beloved Bear. The two were headbanging to the music when they first met, and it was instant love.

One of her greatest accomplishments was her sobriety of which she was proud. Verna also known for her catch phrases such as “It’s time to dance” meaning it was time to get to work, “That’s a wrap” Died July 25, 2026

and “Nee How!” meaning OK or all done. Verna was a dedicated and hardworking mother and grandmother who created countless cherished memories with her family and friends. Above all, she will be remembered for her generous spirit, steadfast faith, and the love she gave freely to everyone in her family.

Verna is survived by her children, Dwayne Trudeau, Malcolm Recollet Jr., Nicholas Recollet, Christian Sams, Bison Sams; her step-children, Holly Alberts, Thor Sams, twins Kendra Scott and Logan Scott; her sisters, Mellinda Trudeau, Delores Trudeau, Laurie Ann Trudeau, Loretta and Sheena Trudeau Ronald Trudeau, special sisters, Vicky Trudeau, Jean Oshkabewisens; her “twin cousin” Liz Murray; her aunts and uncle, Ellen Murray, Martha Murray, Alec Murray and many loving grandchildren, cousins and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an aunt, Elizabeth Murray, grandparents. Rose and Steve Murray; and a brother, Robert Trudeau.
