SUTTONS BAY – Verina Ruth Schaub, 86, of Suttons Bay, passed away Friday, July 10, 2026 at Medilodge of Leelanau.

Verina was born April 16, 1940 in Detroit the daughter of Raymond and Ruth (Martin) Schaub. She attended St. Mary’s School of Lake Leelanau with the Class of 1958 where she was a member of the choir.

Verina found great joy in nature and treasured time spent outdoors. She was an accomplished hunter who once harvested a bear with a bow and arrow and a moose from a canoe.

Family was at the center of Verina’s life. She cherished holidays and traditions, delighting in creating beautiful table settings that welcomed family and friends with warmth and elegance. Her home was a place where love was expressed through thoughtful details, hospitality, and time spent together.

A gifted artist and craftswoman, Verina possessed extraordinary talent with her hands. As the lead interior designer for Milliken Department Store. She was a master seamstress and knitter who could sew nearly anything, expertly reupholster furniture, and create beautiful Christmas wreaths that reflected her eye for design and love of tradition.

Verina’s passion for flowers and gardening led her to establish the Tom’s Food Market Garden Center in West Bay. Never one to stop learning, Verina continued her education in floral design and studied the Died July 10, 2026

Japanese art of ikebana, combining creativity with a deep appreciation for the natural world.

She also loved music and celebration, rarely passing up an opportunity to sing, dance, and enjoy the company of family and friends. Her joyful spirit, adventurous heart, and generous nature touched everyone who knew her. An avid outdoorswoman, she was a proud scuba diving instructor and spent her younger years as a lifeguard at Meadows Bay and Schneider’s Beach.

Verina is survived by a son, Mark Drinan, and a daughter, Michelle Deering, a brother, Raymond Schaub Jr., and two grandchildren, Devin Drinan, and Bronwyn Sterling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Barbara Ann (Marshall) O’Shaughnessy and a son, Michael Drinan. The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11th with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church of Lake Leelanau. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow the service. Father James Siler will serve as celebrant, Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Schools, PO Box 340, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653 and / or Mass Intentions.
