Bunny was born on April 12, 1947, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the late Walter and Jennie (Herron) Wilms. She earned the nickname “Bunny” because she was born at Easter, and the name stayed with her throughout her life.

Following high school, Bunny was out celebrating a friend’s birthday when she met the love of her life, Fred. At the time, Fred was serving in the United States Coast Guard and was temporarily stationed in Manitowoc. Although his service soon took him back aboard his ship, their relationship blossomed through heartfelt letters and long-distance phone calls. Their love only grew stronger, and on December 16, 1967, they were united in marriage at Empire Methodist Church. The newlyweds lived in Cheboygan, Michigan, for a short time while Fred completed his Coast Guard service before returning to Maple City to build their life together. They experienced the heartbreaking loss of their first child, a sorrow Bunny carried with her always. They were later blessed with two sons, Chris and Mike, who became the center of her world.

Bunny was known for her incredible work ethic and friendly smile. Throughout her life she worked at several local businesses, including Foothills, Soda Shop/Western Avenue Grill, Glen Arbor Shell Gas Station, The Landing, Red Pine, and Anderson’s Market. She also helped establish Sleeping Bear Preschool in the 70’s, where her love of children became evident to so many families. She devoted countless hours to caring for children and, for more than 45 years, lovingly portrayed “Mrs. Claus,” bringing joy and Christmas magic to generations of children.

A lifelong dog lover, Bunny shared her home with many beloved companions over the years, beginning with toy poodles, then hounds, and later beagles. She treasured traveling to visit family in Wisconsin, Texas, and Florida, and recently enjoyed attending her class reunion, where she reunited with lifelong friends. She found happiness in feeding the birds, reading a good book, and baking— especially her famous banana bread.

Above all else, Bunny loved her family. Her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren were her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was deeply involved with the Old Settlers Picnic Association and loved the park and the traditions it represented. Bunny was simply a kind, caring, and genuinely good person whose love touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Fred Lanham; her sons, Chris Lanham and Mike (Melinda) Lanham; her grandchildren, Nathaniel (Fiancee Meghan Cepela), Samantha (boyfriend Cameron Olds), Brett Maylone, Mariah (Lorenzo) Forger, and Devin Middaugh; her great-grandchildren, Presley, Douglas, and Amelia; her sister, Joanie (Bill) Cummins; her brother, Walley (Doris) Wilms; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, Bunny was preceded in death by her infant child and her sisters, Connie and Doris “Pinky.”
