Edith “Edi” Short

Edith “Edi” Short, 95, passed away from heart failure and stroke on Monday, September 7th in W. Lafayette, IN.

Born to Dr. LeRoy and Hildegarde Edwards, Edi spent summers camping, boating and fishing with her parents in Leelanau Co., MI where she developed a deep love of the outdoors and the natural world. She was a senior Girl Scout, earning their highest honor, the Curved Bar award in 1945.

Edi graduated from W. Lafayette High School and Purdue University with a BS in Home Economics. She married her high school sweetheart, Luke Short, on D-Day, June 6, 1953.

In 1960 Luke & Edi purchased Burnham’s, a marine and outdoor sporting goods store. They were in business in W. Lafayette, IN for 46 years until they retired. Edi was a member of Central Presbyterian Church for 70 years, and a Purdue Master Gardener. She loved boating, early American History, fly fishing and dancing the polka. She also enjoyed over 40 winters of snowmobiling with her family at their cabin in Alger County, MI and living on their farm near Northport, MI.

Edi is survived by son Charlie Short (wife Pat) of West Lafayette, IN, daughter Dianne Krogh (husband Ken) of Oak Harbor, WA, and two grandsons, Sam Short of Chapel Hill, NC and Max Short of Seattle, WA. Preceding her in death were her son Jamie Short (2006), and her husband of 67 years, Luke Short (2020). Services will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, IN.
