Larry J. Nelson

Larry J. Nelson

May 2, 1947 – October 2, 2026 LELAND – Larry Joseph Nelson, 79, of Leland, passed away Friday, October 2, 2026, at Munson Medical Center with his family by his side.

Larry was born May 2, 1947, in Traverse City, the son of Floyd and Enis (Scotti) Nelson.

On January 25, 1980, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland, he married Constance “Connie” Nelson, who survives.

For four decades, Larry practiced law from his office in Leland while dedicating much of his life to serving the community he loved. He served on the Leland Public School Board for 10 years, including six years as Board President. Larry also served the people of Leelanau County as Assistant Prosecutor, Prosecutor, and ultimately as Probate Judge, a position he held for eight years.

While Larry was proud of his professional career and public service, those who knew him will remember just as much the person behind those accomplishments. He was quick-witted and had a wonderful sense of humor. His humor, kindness, and genuine interest in people made him someone others simply enjoyed being around.

Larry loved golf and spent many years playing at the Leland Country Club and other courses. He was also a longtime member of Leland Community United Methodist Church, where he and Connie sang in the choir and were part of the LCUMC group, “The Porch Singers.”

Larry and Connie shared a love of travel and adventure, creating many wonderful memories together along the way. At home, Larry enjoyed caring for his flowers and trees and treasured his home on Good Harbor Bay. It was a place he loved deeply—a place filled with family, laughter, and many of the moments that meant the most to him.

Above all, Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was kind, loving, and caring. He loved his family deeply, and the laughter, stories, and memories he created with them will be treasured for years to come.

Larry is survived by his wife of 46 years, Connie; his sons, Geoff Niessink (Annie) and Ben Nelson; his sister, Paula Hoffman; and his grandchildren, Abby Niessink, Olivia Niessink, Langley Nelson, Kade Nelson, Harper Nelson, and Cash Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Enis Nelson; his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Marti Nelson; and his brother-in-law, James Hoffman.

A memorial service celebrating Larry’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, at Leland Community United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Leland Community United Methodist Church, PO Box 602, Leland, MI 49654.
