Hugh A. Willey

Traverse City – Hugh Alfred Willey, 96, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at his home.
Hugh was born May 7, 1930 in Ashland, Oregon the son of William ad Florence (Hughes). He was affectionately known by many as “Mr. Whistler,” and “Mr. BeeBop,” and leaves behind a remarkable legacy of music, service, friendship, and encouragement.
Hugh’s love of music began at a very young age. He started playing piano as a child and went on to enjoy an extraordinary 91 years as a pianist. His talent and passion for music led him to become an early performer, and during the 1950s he traveled throughout the region sharing his music and entertaining audiences. Music was not simply something Hugh did—it was a lifelong part of who he was.
Throughout his years in the Traverse City area, Hugh also worked various side jobs at local establishments, including Dill’s, now known as the Blue Tractor, and Ricciardi’s Italian Restaurant. Wherever he was, Hugh had a way of bringing his personality, humor, and love of music with him.
One of Hugh’s greatest gifts was his willingness to share what he knew with the next generation. He taught young people to play piano and saxophone, encouraging them to discover the joy and confidence that music can bring. His influence reached far beyond the notes on a page, as he offered his time, knowledge, and encouragement to countless young people.
A proud Army veteran, Hugh carried a spirit of dedication and service throughout his life. In his later retirement years, he found joy in hiking, spending time outdoors, and helping youth. Even after a lifetime devoted to music, Hugh continued to give of himself to others.
