In Loving Memory of Kirby Kent Kalchik
In Loving Memory of Kirby Kent Kalchik

Kirby Kent Kalchik passed away on October 19, 2026, in Omena, Michigan. Born in Traverse City to Stanley and Valeta Kalchik, he grew up on 20 wooded acres in beautiful Omena, surrounded by family and friends.
In his early adult years, Kirby traveled wherever work took him, working as a heavy equipment operator in Leelanau County and on a shrimp boat along the Gulf Coast of Florida. He often took motorcycle adventures to Colorado before eventually returning home to northern Michigan.
Kirby was a true jack-of-all-trades, he worked in maintenance for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB), where he made many friends. He had a real talent for gaspowered engines and kept them running like it was second nature.
Kirby found great joy in processing and delivering firewood throughout the county, viewed as a friend by all of his customers. Rain or shine you could hear his chainsaw roaring and his maul ringing as it struck wood.
Known for his charming smile, steelblue eyes, and grease-covered hands, he enjoyed tinkering with machinery and hunting for treasures at yard sales. He loved his family and friends, always offering a listening ear, mechanical advice, and the latest updates on current events and the weather.
Kirby is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Kalchik and Heather Putney (Derek); his son, Jeffrey Kalchik (Kati); his cherished grandchildren, Trenton, Owen, Lily, and Charlotte; his sister, Carnie Bunker; and his nephews, Julian and Jesse Bunker.
Kirby was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Valeta Kalchik. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and loyal dog.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2027, with details to be announced.
Memorial donations may be directed to Leelanau Christian Neighbors.
