SUTTONS BAY – Mary Anne Schlee, 94, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Medilodge of Leelanau.

Mary Anne was born December 20, 1929 in Detroit the daughter of Alfred and Lucille (Peterson) Stryker. She attended Cooley High School. One of her first jobs was working at Saks 5th Avenue in downtown Detroit.

On November 11, 1950 in Detroit she married Edward “Ted” F. Schlee Jr. who preceded her in death on June 21, 2021.

Ted and Mary Anne raised their family inBirmingham,MI. Shewasaloving mother, positive and always was ready to laugh. Mary Anne enjoyed making a beautiful home. Following in her father’s footsteps she filled the house with antiques. She loved to peruse cookbooks and magazines to find new recipes to try out on family and friends. Entertaining was her passion.

In 1968 the Schlee’s bought the old oneroom schoolhouse in Suttons Bay. They spent their weekends attending local auctions. In the early ‘80’s Ted and Mary Anne moved full time to Suttons Bay and became active members in the community. Mary Anne joined the local P.E.O. chapter. She was a skilled quilter and had a circle of good friends who also shared her love of quilting and needlework.

She enjoyed playing bridge, mahjong, a rousing game of Dominos and reading a good book. Although she never learned to swim, she still went sailing around the Great Lakes with Ted and family. Mary Anne and Ted were avid travelers in Europe and stayed at elder hostels, went on canal boat trips and rode the Orient Express. She was always happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Mary Anne will always be remembered for her warmth and hospitality.

Mary Anne is survived by her two children, Peter Schlee, Beth (Bill) Bassett; a daughter in law, Lesli Schlee; her grandchildren, Paige (Corey) Peterson, Garrett (Katelyn) Bassett, Nicolette Bassett, Jenna (Brock) Blackner, and Jonathan (Neyra) Schlee; her great grandchildren, Braxson Blackner, Baylor Blackner, Everett Peterson, Jonathan River Schlee, Norah Bassett, Clara Peterson and Vanessa Blackner.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Teddy; her parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Martha (Frank) Musa and a son, Todd Schlee.

Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering has been held.
