Manitou dock woes continue
North Manitou Island is home to a million-dollar, unappreciated dock. That’s because ferry service to the island, which is owned by the National Park Service, has been suspended even after an expensive dock extension was constructed earlier this summer to accommodate the ferry boat Mishe-Mokwa. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

GTB powwow celebrates culture
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) held its annual Kchi Wiikwedong Anishinaabek Maawnjidowin Contest Powwow this weekend in Peshawbestown. With over $36,000 in dance contest prize money, attendees had the opportunity to watch dancers in various age groups compete in categories like men’s and women’s fancy, woodland, sidestep, and more. In addition to the dance competition, there was also a singing contest that drum groups were able to participate in. The host drum this year was “The Boyz,” who hailed from Minneapolis, Minnesota. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

OAB to purchase waterfront:
The Old Art Building (OAB) in Leland finalized the purchase of riverfront property adjacent to its facilities on July 31, reaching its first milestone to extend its campus with 280 feet of shoreline on the Leland River as well as adding signifi cant green space. Now, the OAB is embarking on its public phase of a capital campaign to further fund the purchase and ultimate extension of the art center’s existing campus. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

He and his wife Barbara Richman live in Omena. *** Steve Yoder’s term as Solon Township trustee expires in November. *** An incorrect headline was published last week for a story lauding the fundraising work of the Friends of Lake Leelanau Foundation, which starting in 2025 will be funding the project to eradicate Eurasian water milfoil from the lake. G-L School seeking $8.1 million bond
Glen Lake has come to a final decision of whether or not they will put a millage on the ballot in November. After months of talks, the Lakers will put the wheels in motion for an $8.175 million campaign (.48 mills over 20 years) to fund infrastructure projects at the school. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

Spectrum expands service in west Leelanau
Spectrum announced Tuesday the launch of Spectrum Internet, Mobile, TV and Voice services to more than 660 homes and small businesses in Leelanau County. Spectrum’s newly-constructed fiber-optic network buildout to residents and businesses in portions of Cleveland, Glenn Arbor, Empire and Kasson Townships, is part of the company’s approximately $9 billion investment in previously unserved or underserved rural communities, partly offset by $2 billion in government support funding. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM
