A former tribal official who resides in Suttons Bay is inserting himself into one of biggest environmental controversies in the Great Lakes region and the nation. The former head of the Natural Resources Department of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Desmond Berry, is now trying to facilitate discussions between the company that operates Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac, Enbridge, and Michigan’s 12 federally-recognized Indian tribes. “Only good things can happen when you make a point of involving the tribes in talks about our environment,” Berry said this week. *** Justin Bembeneck, one of two Interlochen people charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and home invasion stemming from an alleged attack on a Cedar family in January is competent to stand trial. A competency hearing held Monday in the 13th Circuit Court at the Leelanau County Courthouse found Bembeneck competent to stand trial on two charges of assault with intent to commit murder, an offense punishable by life, or any number of years, in prison. 07/02/2024 05:21 PM

Deadline nears for mayor nominations
The Omena Mayor Election season is underway! If you are a year-round or seasonal resident of the Greater Omena area, your pet qualifies to run for Mayor of Omena. Elections are held every three years and it is a fundraiser for the Omena Historical Society (OHS). Applications are available on the OHS website. Leelanau County’s independent auditing firm, Rehmann, found some errors in the county’s financial statements for 2023. The Suttons Bay Bingham District Library will host Mollie Moody on Wednesday, July 10 to share her father’s book “A Father’s Arms.” The book is the diary of Captain Maynard’s experience as a tank commander in Europe during World War II. County Board OKs energy grant application
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners approved another grant application from the county’s Energy Futures Task Force at their June 18 regular session. This time around, the county is applying for $19,080 through theDepartmentof Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), which would be used to conduct a “county-wide energy survey.” County commissioner and task force member Kama Ross presented this item at the county board’s May sessions, where the county board approved the task force’s request to write a Community Energy Management Program application. 07/02/2024 05:21 PM
