SB woman values outdoor education
County residents looking to adopt more eco-friendly waste disposal methods can learn about composting from displays at the Leo Creek Preserve in Suttons Bay and the Poor Farm Barn in Maple City. Kate Thornhill, a lifelong resident of Suttons Bay, made these displays after studying composting for close to a decade.

G-L adds second GSRP class
Glen Lake will now have space for 32 preschool students with almost all families paying zero in tuition, thanks to a grant that fell into place last week. The State of Michigan awards money to the Intermediate school district that turns into slots for students that are divided up amongst local school districts.

Grants OK’d for pre-schools
The start of a new school year is often an exciting time for families as kids look forward to connecting with classmates and parents seek relief with school day routines. This year, the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential (MiLEAP) has worked to expand preschool opportunities by lifting income factors and expanded preschool eligibility for 4-year-olds, helping many more families access free early education programming.

In addition to the new Principal Shelagh Fehrenbach, there will plenty of faces — new and old — greeting students at Leland Public School next week. Longtime science teacher Jeremy Peplinski has been appointed assistant principal.

Shelagh Fehrenbach:
While Shelagh Fehrenbach may be the new K-12 principal at Leland Public School this year, it’s hardly her first time on campus. The 2005 alumnus is back at her alma mater almost 20 years later after graduating, ready to serve in a district that she says feels a lot like “coming home.” “I keep saying it feels like I’m working in a magical time machine; the new building is bright and beautiful and I love being in it, even though I still need a tour guide for some of the entrances and exits,” Fehrenbach said.

New administrators on board at S-B School
One new and another, more familiar face will greet Suttons Bay students when they return to classrooms next week. Christopher Reeve is the school’s new K-12 principal.
