5Loaves2fish launches Peshawbestown meal site
The local nonprofit 5Loaves2Fish will now distribute meals in Peshawbestown at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church every Thursday from 4-6 p.m., adding another location to its growing list of meal sites to help those who are hungry or who live with food insecurity.

Omena is all decked out for the holidays
The Village of Omena is bedecked for the holidays! About two dozen hardy people turned out to decorate the Post Office, Omena Historical Museum and the Fire Hall Saturday. It was a slightly chilly and rainy day, but not the worst weather that the annual Deck the Village event has had.

Native American Heritage month celebrated at S-B
Suttons Bay Public School celebrated Native American Heritage Month with a special spirit week held from Nov. 18 to Nov. 22. Throughout the week, school staff and students participated in themed dress-up days and activities aimed at fostering pride, awareness, and unity. Students embraced their creativity and cultural appreciation by participating in themed days such as “Rock Your Mocs or Crocs” and “Rock Your Ribbon Skirt or Shirt.” The week also provided an opportunity to spotlight and honor the diverse Native American traditions represented within the district’s student body.

Jingle dancers demonstrate culture
Earlier this month St. Mary K-12 students had the unique opportunity to attend a Native American Heritage presentation, featuring eighth grader Alexa Diaz, a talented jingledress dancer. Alexa, alongside two of her friends, showcased various Native American dance styles, sharing her culture and skills with the school community.

Abbott picks Leelanau over Santa Barbara
Professor Emeritus Porter Abbott always told his colleagues that he intended to move to northern Michigan when he retired. This would raise some eyebrows, as he was already working as a teacher in the fair climate of Santa Barbara, California, which is often seen as an ideal place for someone to settle down in their retirement years.

Bettering the community
An active member of the community in more ways than one, Empire resident Kathy Cole uses much of her time to volunteer in Leelanau County — whether it be as the current Glen Lake Women’s Club president, or as a volunteer with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
