‘Rolling Taps’ start Memorial observance
Leelanau Township will again hold its Rolling Taps in Northport at 10 a.m. Memorial Day. The Taps stations start just south of town and continue all the way to the Leelanau Township Cemetery, where the Memorial Day Service will start at 10:30 a.m. The Northport Community Band will play at the service, and the featured speaker is Jim White. The Memorial Day Rolling Taps started in Northport in response to COVID. The annual service was not held that year, since people couldn’t gather. The response to this moving start of the program has become part of the tradition. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM

Wax museum at St. Mary
Wax museum at St. Mary
St. Mary School fifth graders welcomed schoolmates and visitors May 9 to their interactive wax museum. Modeled after Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Washington, D.C., students posed in costume next to their chosen historical figures. The interactive wax museum had the goal of bringing historical figures and events to life through “wax” figures that visitors can see and hear. Once the “audio” button was pushed, the student came to life and shared a prepared speech about their chosen historical figure. The project began as students read a “Who Was…” book and studied the history of their chosen historical figure. They then composed a five-paragraph essay about their chosen figure before preparing their live presentation. Pictured here is Louis LaCross dressed at Franklin Roosevelt. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM

The obtrusive messaging sign outside Glen Arbor’s town hall is coming down. At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Glen Arbor Township Board approved removal of the infamous eyesore by a vote of 4-1, with the opposing vote coming from township supervisor Peter VanNort. The motion was made by trustee John Peppler and seconded by treasurer Lee Houtteman, after Houtteman updated the board on his investigation into the cost and logistics of various options to replace the sign to meet the size requirement of the township’s zoning ordinance, as agreed by the board at its recent special meeting. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM
