Maple Sugaring Days on tap
It is maple sugaring time in northern Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) is hosting its second public maple sugaring event. Donations sought for lake association auction
The Lake Leelanau Lake Association (LLLA) is seeking donors and sponsors for its annual spring auction, dedicated to raising funds to protect and enhance the quality and beauty of Lake Leelanau. The virtual auction, which runs from April 15-28, is the primary fundraiser for the nonprofi t association, which focuses its work on the stewardship of the lake.

In a medical emergency, people generally want whichever emergency service they call to get to the scene fast, but ambulances in rural areas face special challenges to help residents. The biggest obstacle for fire and rescue stations in rural areas is the distance between someone in need and the station.

In a quick turn of events, Village of Northport Council is now uncertain whom it will appoint as the at-large representative on the Northport/ Leelanau Township Utilities Authority (NLTUA). At a special meeting Feb. 1, council had arrived at an unofficial consensus regarding the planned appointment of Campbell McLeod to the position. *** No raise is warranted for a township clerk whose duties have largely been reassigned to her deputy. Such was the sentiment at Tuesday’s meeting of the Kasson Township Board — the first since a Feb. 1 special meeting during which duties of Clerk Traci Cruz were reassigned to her deputy. But it wasn’t fellow board members expressing frustration over the situation. It was a member of the audience.

Chili cookoff Saturday in G-A
Surprisingly enough, the snowmobile drag races were held as scheduled. It was a grass and mud mobile race, but it was surprisingly well attended.

Mallory Lowe earns student-athlete award
Excellence in the classroom and on the court is commonplace for Leland senior Mallory Lowe. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has selected 10 student-athletes from Class C and D member schools to receive scholarships through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program.
