WETHERBEE

Npt. school superintendent rated ‘effective’ again

The Northport Public School Board of Education (BOE) unanimously voted December 11 to approve the rating of superintendent Neil Wetherbee as “effective” for his 2023 district leader evaluation. Unlike other school districts in Leelanau County, Northport does not produce an evaluation document with specific ratings of each domain. However, Wetherbee said the district continues to follow the Marzano Teacher Evaluation System, one of the evaluations recommended by the Michigan Council of Educator Effectiveness. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

Peace on Earth

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

STRs can be good neighbors

It seems that short-term rentals (STRs) are on peoples’ minds in Leelanau County. Suttons Bay Village recently signed a contract for a third party to monitor STR listings and operate a 24/7 hotline for complaints; Elmwood Township directed its planning commission to use an overlay district or zoning amendments to remove STRs from “Greilickville neighborhoods”; and Suttons Bay and Bingham townships are updating their STR ordinances and introducing “good neighbor” policies. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

All I Want for Christmas

All I Want for Christmas

To the editor: All I Want for Christmas from our House of Representatives is preserving voting rights, funding our allies, protecting women’s healthcare and reproductive rights, combatting the climate crisis, tackling immigration reform, expanding healthcare benefits, lowering medication costs, supporting public education, stopping book banning, continuing to build a strong, fair economy, banning the sale of assault weapons, and strengthening our democracy. Unfortunately the Republicanled House is giving our citizens a lump of coal with more chaos and inactivity. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

Conservancy criticism

Conservancy criticism

To the editor: I took a walk today on the new section of bike trail being installed by the Leelanau Conservancy on the east side of Wheeler Rd - right next to NPS land and my home. I was shocked and saddened by the methods they are using bulldozers, switchbacks up the very steepest parts of the hill, and bermed trails around 6 feet wide. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
