Leelanau expands course offerings

The Leelanau School, an experiential coed college prep boarding and day school for grades 9-12 in Glen Arbor, is heading into the new year with plenty of new faces, programs and facility updates. “We are pleased in the past year to have remodeled our student lounge, dining hall, and learning commons space, while also adding new technology and furniture to several classrooms,” Rob Hansen, head of school said.

Northport program records, tracks history

A program at Northport Public Schools continuing this year is teaching students how to research and record Leelanau history. The Native American trails project allows schools like Northport and Suttons Bay to work in collaboration with historian and archaeologist Emily Modrall to do research on historical markers significant to Native American tribes in the area.

Npt. School ready for students

As the new school year inches closer, Northport Public School staff are readying for the first day back and finishing up different projects around campus. New exterior improvements and additions that have been in the works since early spring are aimed to finish up this year, including the completion of a new pole barn that will be used as a heated dry space for tractor storage, furniture, and other large items.

Glen Lake teachers preparing for start

Staff members of Glen Lake Community Schools (GLCS) gathered in the cafeteria on Monday for a back-to-school breakfast that smelled as fresh as the upcoming 2022-23 school year. The books are ready and pencils are sharpened as staff and students put on their learning caps in hoping of making 2022-23 a year to remember .

S-B Virtual gives families options to learn, grow

Students in public schools throughout Leelanau County are used to the routine of going to school and sitting in a classroom every week. However at Suttons Bay Virtual (SBV), kids K-12 have the opportunity to work from home, giving these respective students and their families the flexibility they may need to advance in their educational journey. Suttons Bay Virtual School has undergone updates for the coming year and has refined and improved options for all SBV families to connect, learn, and grow together in person, including the new addition of a Virtual Learning Lab located within the middle school building (near the entrance). The students enrolled in SBV can schedule time with their teachers to meet in person at the location, and can also participate in the school’s L.I.F.E. group activities that are planned throughout the year.

Improvements at S-B, prepared for new year

Students at Suttons Bay Public Schools will notice both big and small changes as they enter campus for the new academic year. From new gym equipment and course curriculum, to new staff members and room setups, the district has been working hard all summer to prepare for the new and familiar faces on the first day of school on Sept. 6.

New faces, positions at Leland School

Noticeably absent from Leland School hallways next week are five staff members who retired at the end of the 2021-22 in June or departed as recently as last month. Superintendent Stephanie Long and an ad hoc committee has interviewed several candidates for the K-12 principal position vacated last month by Jeannie McClure who retired her post to pursue a position in New York City.
