New planning head recommended
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners recommended Interim Planning Director Gail Myer for promotion to planning director at their executive session Tuesday. Myer has big shoes to fill as her predecessor, Trudy Galla, had served the county for 35 years when she announced her retirement in November.

Elmwood rescinds STR directive
Following an extended closed session with township attorney Bryan Graham, the Elmwood Township Board voted Monday to rescind a December motion directing the planning commission to remove short-term rentals (STRs) from Greilickville neighborhoods “using an overlay district or amendment to the zoning ordinances” at their Monday meeting.

Township approves $100k for Woolsey Airport restoration
The Leelanau Township board of trustees unanimously voted to support the Woolsey Memorial Airport Restoration project Tuesday with a maximum of $100,000 to be taken out of existing facility funds. Township Supervisor Mike McMillan said at this week’s regular board meeting that discussion of the airport’s urgent needs and current state goes back more than four years, noting how previous board trustees invested funds for an architecture firm to assess the building to find a way forward.

Trail plans spark debate, again
The battle for the final 4.2-mile “Segment 9” of the Heritage Trail within the Sleeping Bear Dunes is heating up again as plans are finalized and opposition is questioning the impact on the environment with roughly 7,300 trees’ fate in doubt, according to an assessment of the environmental impact by Borealis Consulting LLC in Traverse City.
