State duties, family duties collide
We pause in our thrilling episode of trying to write the new $80 billion state budget before a self-imposed June 30 deadline, to dive into a topic that seldom gets any media attention because who really cares about the personal family sacrifices made by elected officeholders? 06/19/2024 04:23 PM
Frightening
Frightening
To the editor: Given today’s unjust lawfare, jailed political opponents, free speech censorship. and blatant lies, we should be much more concerned about Democrats than about Trump. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM

Thanks to the dads in our lives
It’s been nearly 25 years since I’ve spent Father’s Day with my dad; 2013 with my fatherin- law. But they are still with us. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
Take your time; choose wisely
Take your time; choose wisely
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners is about to enter its third round of interviews with the leading candidates for the county’s new administrator/chief financial officer (CFO) role, which could lead to a quick resolution to over three years of internal conflict in local government if the board chooses wisely. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM

More alternatives for Heritage Trail project
As a 5/9/24 front page Enterprise article said, the debate over the final 4.2-mile Segment 9 of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail continues. There’s a simple reason why. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
Township deserves better
Township deserves better
To the editor: As a Trustee of Leland Township, I am compelled to address the ongoing issues with our current Supervisor, Ms. Och. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
Forum confusing
Forum confusing
To the editor: John Popa’s interview (forum) in the June 5th edition was a convoluted and confusing obfuscation of the fundamental question: “Will the county experience a reduction in its electric bill if a solar array is installed at the government center?” The fact that Michigan rates lower on the scale for optimum solar placement than a sun drenched state like Texas is irrelevant. There are thousands of solar installations in our state. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM

Solar-When and Where
To the editor: It is imperative that we prioritize reliable energy sources when transitioning a service as important as the nation’s electrical grid. Research demonstrates the high environmental and economic costs of rushing the grid transition from affordable-reliable sources to expensive weather-dependent renewable alternatives. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
Thank you
Thank you
To the editor: Thursday June 6th I attended as a observer the Leelanau county Energy Futures Task Force meeting. I appreciated seeing fellow citizens working together to try and take on the task to shrink are carbon foot print. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM

To the editor: Point Broadband continues working to bring high speed internet to our county. That work is largely funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
No dock
No dock
To the editor: Leland Township Supervisor Susan Och’s typical lack of urgency and failure to communicate with fellow Board members resulted in DNR’s stunning removal of a dock on the Leland River. Her failure will result in a needless increase in difficulty for those putting in and taking out their boats on River Street, as well as a decrease in vital boat parking in Leland for Leland businesses. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
Conflict of interest
Conflict of interest
To the editor: Unfortunately, the pertinent wording in the Leelanau County conflict of interest policy was not included in coverage of a citizen’s request to investigate whether the chair of the Energy Futures Task Force had violated that policy. The wording in the first line of the request reads, “A clear example of a conflict of interest occurs when a public servant openly advocates for the approval and funding of a program which would result in a benefit to the public servant.” The chair — Joe DeFors— helped write a grant that would directly pay him and lobbied for its passage. 06/12/2024 05:52 PM
