Opinion

Voter ignorance vs. electorate enlightenment
When candidates, campaign managers and political consultants say their prayers at night they most likely ask that Michigan voters continue to be ignorant. That’s because an illinformed citizen is easy to exploit for political gain. Or to put it another way, it is infinitely easier to pull the wool over the eyes of a voter who is too lazy to do their homework on a candidate for this office or that. 03/20/2024 05:09 PM

Growing things is fun. A lot of people got into farming with that in mind, only to realize a mortgage or two down the road that there’s more to it. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Do the smart thing
Do the smart thing
To the editor: After reading the solar energy article on the front page, Feb. 29, I felt a need to respond to the “controversy” aspect of it. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM

3 years living in, covering the peninsula
Flyin’ down the southwest side of M-22 with my arm out the window and a fresh March breeze hitting my face is all I need to put a smile on my face. I make a stop at Good Harbor Beach and there are people watching the most beautiful sunset (like them all) while enjoying each other’s company. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Appalled by intolerance
Appalled by intolerance
To the editor: In a letter published in the Enterprise, county board member Kama Ross laments that she is “continually disheartened by public comment … and letters to the editor from county residents who do not check their facts before sharing their views.” She was elected. I am appalled at her lack of tolerance for opinions that disagree with hers. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Reproductive health
Reproductive health
To the editor: Voters need to know that Republicans intend to undermine all aspects of women’s reproductive rights, all of which a majority of Americans strongly approve. For example, the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) decision by the Alabama Supreme Court making embryos created through the IVF process “Persons”, landed like a lead balloon. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Solar panels over parking lots?
Solar panels over parking lots?
To the editor: A recent Enterprise letter to the editor (March 7th) criticized the idea of putting in solar energy at the Leelanau County Government Center, and specifically called out mounting some of them as carports over parking areas. Another letter pointed out— correctly— that although solar panel output is reduced by cloud cover here, installations eventually pay back more than they cost. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Holy Week in scripture
Holy Week in scripture
To the editor: In the season of Lent, Christians reflect on Christ’s earthly ministry and look forward to the yearly observation of Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday’s institution of The Lord’s Supper, Good Friday’s sober reflection of Christ’s Crucifixion and death, culminating in the great joy prepared for all of God’s Creation’s on Easter Morning in Christ Jesus’ triumphant Resurrection. The Bible testifies the truth with Matthew 27:1, Mark 15:2, Luke 23:3 all recording Jesus’ response to Pilate’s interrogation during His trial, “It is as you say.” With John 18:37 expanding Christ’s testimony, “I am, as you say, a king. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM
Do they care?
Do they care?
To the editor: The GOP response to President Biden’s State of the Union address was a vapid, emotionally overacted, Sally Struthers-like performance completely devoid of content. That party putting their chosen representative, a woman, in a kitchen says everything we need to know about their wished for reversion to an imagined golden past. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM

Are you one of them?
Everybody knows somebody who is a self-described Democrat or Republican, but how many folks go around boosting that they are an Independent usually described as a voter who plunks for the person and not automatically for an R or a D just because they are thus. 03/13/2024 11:46 PM

For the past ten years, The Michigan Press Association has given the Rep. Peter Petallia Memorial Sunshine Award to public servants that strive to promote and protect transparency in government. The award is named after former State Representative Peter Pettallia of Presque Isle who embodied all good things in governing especially support of the citizens in his community and an understanding of the importance of keeping them informed through a transparent government. 03/06/2024 05:30 PM

“Journalist” isn’t a dirty word
I get the impression that the moment I identify myself as a journalist or reporter to a person, their moods shift from friendly to guarded or openly hostile, like I’m a potential threat or enemy in an open war. Like it or not, it seems like Trump was speaking for many Americans when he said he considered the press the enemy of the people. 03/06/2024 05:30 PM
