Dirty v. clean
To the editor: Some of our county commissioners are enamored with green energy projects, but are apparently unaware of the costs, environmental impacts, and reliability issues. Mother Earth News reports in their article “Dirty Drawbacks of Clean Energy” from June/July 2024, lithium mining is intensely damaging to the environment.

Traffic snarled by road work
Work resumed on Grandview Parkway/Front Street in Traverse City Monday, bringing rush hour traffic to a crawl. Crews completed the first segment of the project prior to the National Cherry Festival and are now rebuilding over a mile of the U.S. highway from Railroad Avenue to Division Street.

Price for sweet cherries jumps
Even farm-fresh advocates might grimace when dropping $7 up to $8 into a safety box while picking up a quart of sweet cherries at county roadside markets. Social media posts during the past week took aim at high sweet cherry prices.

Lewis sets year-end goals
Interim Administrator Richard Lewis presented a list of “six-month goals” to the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners at their July executive session this week. Among Lewis’s requests to the board was to grant him power to appoint Interim Finance Director Cathy Hartesvelt as permanent finance director.

District 1 commissioner seat left vacant
Jamie Kramer, Leelanau County’s District 1 commissioner, amended her June 29 resignation letter Tuesday afternoon to make her resignation effective immediately. With Kramer’s position now vacant, the remaining commissioners resolved to leave her seat empty for the remainder of her term at a special session held on the same day.

Our beloved mother, Helen Stimson, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The cause was complications from Parkinsons Disease, five days shy of her 88th birthday.

Rasa Poorman
A resident of Leelanau County, Rasa Poorman passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 30,2024 at her Home in Maple City, Michigan after a three and a half year battle with ovarian cancer. She passed peacefully with her husband at her side along with a small group of family and friends.
