LWVLC to host meeting
The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host an informational meeting next Wednesday, April 3 about the proposal renewal of a millage for early childhood services. The program, titled “Early Childhood Millage — What it Supports and Why it Matters” is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m.

Gearing up for National Poetry Month in Leelanau Twp.
April is National Poetry Month and the Leelanau Township Library in Northport has a series of programs planned to celebrate it. The events will be held every Tuesday evening in April from 7 – 8:30 pm. This Tuesday’s program features Carrie Cantalupo Sharp, Michael Hughes, and Chelsea Marsh. Carrie is a published poet who is working on a hybrid chapbook. Michael’s chapbook, First Risings, was published in 2012. Chelsea has been a writer and judge for the Traverse Area District Library (TADL) Poets Night Out.

Erica Adams finds her nest in Empire
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore (SBDNL) biologist Erica Adams is living the dream as she monitors the endangered Piping Plover and is a lead on educating the public. Adams, 29, originally from Rochester Hills, has paved her way through the National Park system at various parks throughout the country, but eventually wound up back in the Sleeping Bear Dunes in 2019.

‘Open winter’ frustrates fishermen
I wonder what Leelanauts were saying about the weather in 1905? That’s the year of the “open winter,” as described by folks on Drummond Island, anyway. Betsey Price of Lake Leelanau was born and raised on the island, and heard about the weather phenomena that must have seemed totally out of place in an era still clinging to the Little Ice Age.

Fire Chief gets raise in G-A
The Glen Arbor Township Board approved a 3.6% raise for fire Chief Bryan Ferguson during their monthly meeting last. The raise increases Ferguson’s salary from $114,000 to $118,004, matching the cost-of-living adjustment and the raise percentage approved for the township board resolutions adopted in February.
