Ethics probe sought
A woman identifying herself as Patty Lesch of Northport approached the board during public comment at its May 21 meeting to call for officials to conduct an “ethical violation investigation” into Joe DeFors, chair of the county’s Energy Futures Task Force, for allegedly “seeking personal gain in his position.”

Church and state
To the editor: It was written in a recent paper that we need to keep religion out of the White House citing Thomas Jefferson’s words “separation of church and state” as justification. But a history lesson is needed.

Dark clouds on the horizon
To be sure they were not popping the champagne corks and singing “Happy Days Are Here Again.” In fact they called the event “boring.” Yet the prognosticators reported that Michigan’s economy is “strong and stable,” and when quizzed about any dark clouds on the horizon, they uniformly dismissed it as, it not, folly, darn close to it. Such was the lead story out of the gathering of the state’s top drawer bean counters/economists whose vital job is to predict how the state is growing and how much moola lawmakers will have to play with as they orchestrate the writing of the new state budget.

Improving County Government Openness
“Power corrupts, and there is nothing more corrupting than power exercised in secret.” National Public Radio journalist Daniel Schorr Some residents, including some commissioners, have questioned the motive behind a complaint filed by a Leelanau County citizen alleging that a task force established by the County Board was continually violating the Open Meetings Act. In fact, even a reporter assigned to cover the story offered a strange commentary for someone with the task of watchdogging local government.

Leelanau Twp. misses ballot deadline
Despite Leelanau Township board members passing language for two renewal millages, the emergency services and general fund, at its regular meeting May 14, it did not meet the deadline for filing with the county to appear on the August primary election ballot.

Elmwood taps new harbormaster
Elmwood Township Marina’s new harbormaster, Dan Jenuwine, introduced himself to the township board at their May regular meeting. He is replacing previous Harbormaster Pete Moon, who stepped down in March to pursue work in the private sector.
