Dan Scripps quietly plays one of the biggest roles in state government in determining the energy future of Michigan, mostly from his home office in Northport. Scripps, the one-term state legislator who rode the coattails of President Barack Obama into office in 2008, was appointed in 2019 to the three-member Michigan Public Service Commission and named its chair in 2020. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

“Twin Flames: Burned!”
Northern Michiganders were stunned when two major documentaries appeared about Twin Flames Universe, a self-help and wellness cult, with its leaders stationed in Suttons Bay. Birth story lost in popular music
Reporter’s note: The third installment follows of a fourpart series delving into the role of Jesus Christ in how we celebrate Christmas. Previous stories dealt with Christ’s use of food and feasts in reaching the hearts of people and how in local schools free speech rights are tempered by the separation of church and state by the First Amendment. This week attention turns to Christ’s presence in Christmas songs new and old. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

Northport holiday concert a success
Even with little to no snow on the ground, the holiday spirit abounds in and around Omena. A high point of the season is the annual Northport Holiday Concert, and it did not disappoint this year. The Village Voices opened the program with a wonderful selection of carols, both traditional and newer. The Northport Community Band followed with a really fun mix of holiday arrangements, from a beautiful medley of the Nutcracker dances to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”, where Kevin LaRose was the best Grinch ever. The concert ended with the Village Voices joining the band and the audience for a sing-along of Christmas tunes. Everyone gathered afterwards to mingle and enjoy a huge selection of wonderful, homemade cookies. The band looked festive in their Ugly Christmas Sweaters. 12/13/2023 05:43 PM
