Deb and Ray Kuhn couldn’t believe their eyes Monday. The Cedar couple, who earlier this month celebrated their 40th anniversary with a trip to France, were shocked and saddened to learn that Notre Dame Cathedral, where they had visited just 10 days earlier, was burning. “It was horrific… heartbreaking to see it in flames,” Deb Kuhn said. Indeed, Paris and the entire world watched as the more than 850-year-old cathedral burned. *** A public hearing will be held Tuesday at the Leland Township Library to determine the need for drain along Schomberg Road. Three “disinterested” property owners will be at the meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. in the Munnecke Room, to determine whether a drainage district should be created to address problems along M-22 in Leland Township. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is inviting the public to comment on a project to improve safe and reliable boat access to the Manitou Islands. The approximately $32 million project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund, will address the impact of natural processes, such as littoral drift (shifting sands) and high-water levels, on the islands’ docks. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM

Spring has sprung; fruit in ‘green tip’
Spring has sprung and so have the daffodils and many of the spring wild flowers. Many of the fruit trees in the area are in “green tip”, which is when the fruit buds have just broken at the tip. It is also when the buds become susceptible to the cold, so cherry and apple farmers hope that there is not another cold snap. When the buds start to open this early, it is always a risk. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM

Co. Brd. increases salaries for ‘25
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted to increase their yearly salaries by 60% and their per diems by over 70% at their regular session on Tuesday, starting in 2025. This pay increase — their first in two-and-ahalf decades — is intended in part to attract younger people to some soon-tobe- vacant seats on the county board. The salary for county commissioners increased from $5,000 to $8,000 and the salary of the county board chairman increased from $7,700 to $10,000 starting next year. Their per diem pay — fixed payments for attending meetings and conferences — also increased from $40 to $70 for a half day of work and from $70 to $120 for a full day, also starting in 2025. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM

Hometown hoopster reflects on WNBA
Liz Shimek was not a household name in Chicago when she played two seasons for the Sky. And there was no big WNBA signing bonus waiting for the 18th pick in the 2006 draft, who happened to be a Michigan State forward that led the Spartans to the NCAA women’s finals. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM
