Open meetings lead to better governance
Open meetings lead to better governance
There’s been much ado about the actions of a new group created by the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners. The Leelanau Energy Futures Task Force was established last fall to educate and advocate for renewable energy on the Leelanau peninsula. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM

To the editor: Having attended the May 13 Leland Township board meeting, I was disappointed to read the Enterprise’s reporting on the DNR dock removal in Leland. Per the story, a DNR proposal to swap park land, detailed in a letter addressed to Supervisor Och, “was not discussed by the Township Board.” The reason, unreported, is the board didn’t know the offer existed. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Food waste
Food waste
To the editor: My last letter was about waste as the archvillain causing our environmental symptoms: extreme/temperatures, hurricanes, food shortages, tornado and health risks etc. We are facing global energy transition. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Truth matters

To the editor: Barbara McQuade in her new book, “Attack From Within: How Disinformation Is Sabotaging America” defines disinformation as the “deliberate use of lies to manipulate people, whether to extract profit or to advance a political agenda.” A recent letter to the Enterprise about a County “cultural survey” reinforces the relevance of McQuade’s quote. The “cultural survey” was not “largely the initiative” of Commissioner Ross. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM

Special birthday
To the editor: Thank you, everyone for all of the cards you sent me for my 95th birthday. They made my birthday extra special. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Service … priceless
Service … priceless
To the editor: Reflecting on some of the recent letters expressing opinions on our sheriffs’ recent meeting with President Trump, it is my sincere hope that despite any political differences, as a community we can all express our appreciation for the dedication to public safety and well being that our sheriff and his staff have demonstrated. In a time when cynicism and divisiveness pervade our politics and press, it is my hope that we can put any differences aside and recognize the public service Sheriff Borkovich and his staff provide us on a daily basis. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM

‘Wacky’ time in the state capital
This is a wacky time of the year around these parts. Members of the house are itching to get the heck out of here to run for reelection back home which is Job One for them. The onlyproblemisJob Onefor you, if you want any state services, is for them to spend $80 billion of your tax dollars first. That includes everything from state cops to janitors at your local school and everything in between. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Vote ‘no’ on millage
Vote ‘no’ on millage
To the editor: It will be up to voters to stop the rapid expansion and spending of the Leelanau County democratically controlled board of commissioners. Voters will have their first opportunity in the August primary election by voting “no” on an unneeded Parenting Communities Millage being advertised as the “children’s millage.” The board has an extra $1.1 million in property tax income that so far has not been budgeted. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM
Discussions in public
Discussions in public
To the editor: At a Board of Commissioner meeting a county attorney explained that commissioners must hold their discussions in front of the public. This is a basic part of open government, because if commissioners talk among themselves outside of the meeting citizens don’t have a chance to participate in the decision-making process. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM

Thank you to Munson Hospital, Doctors and Nurses, Martinson Funeral Home, First Lutheran Church Ladies Aide Society and relatives and friends who sent memorials, flowers, cards and food. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM
What we have…need
What we have…need
To the editor: Following the local news & other sources, I’ve come to a conclusion; we’re in BIG trouble in our county government. Some of our elected officials aren’t performing their positions as stated. 05/22/2024 04:45 PM
