To the editor: We’ve all seen the letters and articles highlighting the pros and cons of the next stretch of the Heritage Trail, which would be just under 5 miles long and cost about 14 million dollars. There is certainly some controversy over cutting some 7,000 trees in natural areas, and while trails are a wonderful thing, to me, this one seems a bit overbearing in its design. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM

A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that 65% of Americans were exhausted with the current state of American politics. Election interest hit a 20-year low in the latest NBC News poll, and majorities of registered voters have unfavorable views of presidential candidates. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM

Trump is ‘rewriting’ politics
Whether you like him or not, when they rewrite the political history of the last 10 years or so, credit can be given to one Donald Trump for rewriting most of the political truisms that dominated the political arena prior to his grand entrance onto the scene. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM

To the editor: Nostalgia, things not much heard anymore. • “That’s tops!” • “Swell.” • “In all my born days.” • “Soup’s on.” • “Hi doll.” • “Not in my lifetime.” • “Well, I have never…” • “Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.” Donna Burr Leland. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM

Craig, a ‘friend’ to Leelanau’ will be missed
Curiosity is the essence of a good interview. That’s why I left the Scott Craig and Carol Bawden home with a feeling of inadequacy. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
Uptick in Piping Plover population a plus
Uptick in Piping Plover population a plus
The plight of the Piping Plover, a small, endangered shorebird, calls for attention and conservation efforts as another breeding season is in full bloom on the peninsula from April through July. We would like to highlight the continued success of the Piping Plover research team at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SBDNL) after years of hard work that has undoubtedly led to a rebound in the small shoreline birds population. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
Elements of democracy
Elements of democracy
To the editor: Democracy is a topic of much discussion in our daily conversations, one result of our political turmoil. Withmanyamong us sharing thoughts on the importance of and elements of democracy, it’s fitting for the Smithsonian (April/May 2024) to reveal the connection of and importance of the library to colonial education and ultimately to the support and understanding of democracy. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
