County Board raises justifified?
County Board raises justifified?
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners approved some dramatic salary increases this month, with their yearly salaries going up by 60% and their per diems — one-time payments for attending meetings — going up by over 70%. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
Survey Value?
Survey Value?
To the editor: “The Cultural Survey” that was conducted in December 2023 has revealed what? All that we know is what Mr. John Scholten, who conducted “The Survey”, has told us. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM

To the editor: Our Federal Representative Jack Bergman appears to many of his constituents to be appeasing Russia’s objectives in the Ukraine by voting against the Ukraine aid package. I hope the voters of the First Michigan Congressional District will remember this in November. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
Waste not
Waste not
To the editor: “What if the climate change problems like plastic pollution, energy crisis, and environmental doom are symptoms of one malady, and it’s something we actually can fix? Correct, the planet is fighting one arch-villain: Waste.” Americans live in the most wasteful civilization in history. It’s beyond what we haul to the curb. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM

To the editor: “What government have you given us, Mr Franklin,” asked the lady. “A Republic, madam, if you can keep it.” This November 5 don’t be a hitchhiker on the road to socialism. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
Bergman opposed Ukraine aid
Bergman opposed Ukraine aid
To the editor: Once again, Rep. Jack Bergman has allied himself with the far-right fringe of the Republican Party — Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Elise Stefanik, among others — this time opposing aid to Ukraine, and thereby providing support to Putin. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
No vote on immigration
No vote on immigration
To the editor: If the sheriff really wants to see the problems at the border addressed, I suggest he urge the MAGA Republicans in the House to bring the immigration bill already negotiated by both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate to a vote. The bill contains most of what the MAGAs want, and Biden has pledged to sign it. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM

To the editor: An opportunity in Leelanau County lies ahead with the August primary. We will be able to support funding for early childhood, senior services, a road millage along with selecting our public servants for the years ahead. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM

To the editor: Bullying is official okay. Example: trampling on a leading presidential candidate because an opponent isn’t polling well. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
Protecting our water
Protecting our water
To the editor: Concerning the on sale/transfer of property septic inspections: we now have over one year of data on systems needing repair or replacement: 16% of those inspected required some improvement. My comments as the commissioners vote to move forward on the ordinance were that this current ordinance does not go far enough in protecting our lakes and streams. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM
‘Thank you’ Sheriff

To the editor: We are fortunate to live in one of the safest counties in Michigan. I felt proud of Sheriff Borkovich for attending the round-table meeting in GR. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM
Excuses
Excuses
To the editor: Sheriff Borkovich calls people who disagree with him and express those opinions via our First Amendment rights, haters? Is that right? Many residents were upset that he appeared with Trump, in uniform, tacitly endorsing his violent rhetoric aimed at immigrants, representing Leelanau County. A real leader, would give a more thoughtful response to this criticism. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM
