Slicing and dicing voting groups
When political races are TCTC — too close to call — the fascinating speculation is that anyone of a whole host of variables could determine the winner. That is where the state and country are as the long-awaited end to the dead heat battle between the former GOP president and current Democratic Vice President. 10/30/2024 05:31 PM

Soaking in the last of the colors
Fall is ever fleeting and so is the color. Nothing is better than taking a drive on the Leelanau Peninsula during prime fall color. 10/23/2024 06:26 PM

We’re in this together
Earlier this year while it was still hot and humid, I was riding my bicycle on the Leelanau Trail near Mawby Vineyards and Winery when I heard the thud-thud-thud of a flat tire hitting pavement behind me. “Oh no, not again,” I thought. 10/16/2024 08:25 PM

Exploring, appreciating our national parks
While I try to walk a trail every weekend, I recently made a point to get out to visit our local national park, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, last month on National Public Lands Day. Usually held annually on the fourth Saturday of September, people are invited to participate in a day of service for public lands, which helps to promote stewardship of the parks and the resources it provides us. 10/09/2024 05:51 PM

Elevate cherries and farmers who grow them
The cherry is queen of crops grown in Leelanau County. Why not give it an official title for all of Michigan? A bill was introduced last week by state Sen. 09/25/2024 04:23 PM

Visit South Manitou in 2025
Last week, I had the privilege of traveling to South Manitou Island with a group from the Leelanau Historical Society. This trip had been on my bucket list ever since I moved to the Leelanau Peninsula in 2021. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM
Breaking tasks into chunks
Breaking tasks into chunks
A couple weeks ago, I took vacation time to visit friends and family in New Hampshire. The highlight of the trip was my visit to Mount Cardigan. It’s a somewhat less imposing climb compared to many of the nearby White Mountains, at 3,155 feet above sea level. But in the words of another party of hikers who I encountered on the trail, “‘easier’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘easy.’” The weather was clear on the day of the hike, but several days of rain earlier that week made the hike pose two very different challenges. On the one hand, there was a pressure cooker: humidity trapped under the forest canopy in the valleys below the mount. On the other, was the summit: bare granite unshielded by tree cover and exposed to powerful, cold winds. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM

Gender gap in presidential race
If it’s the boy voters vs. the girls on the presidential playground, the boys pick Donald Trump by a seven point margin which is a solid win for the former prez. 09/04/2024 03:50 PM

Friend lost, now 1 dog family
We lost a friend last week. The kind with a cool nose and wagging tail. 08/28/2024 10:35 PM

Candidates share ‘mom’ messages
Candidates for office are always scratching around for some way to connect with voters who may or may not have anything in common with the candidate per se. Politicans want to avoid at all cost the impression that he or she is “out of touch” with the citizens they need to get into office. 08/28/2024 10:35 PM

Dixon considering run in 2026
If you voted for the losing candidate for governor in 2022, you might want to start looking for those Tudor Dixon yard signs stuffed out there in the garage some place. As you are about to read for the first time, she could run again in 2026. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM
